Cubs Take Series from Whiff-Happy Padres

Game One: Cubs 7, SD 3
W: Jenkins (5-3)
L: Ross (0-3)

Fergie Jenkins goes all the way for his eighth complete game, striking out seven Padres (notice the theme here; lots of Ks). Ron Santo shows signs of breaking out of his slump, thumping a two-run homer and driving in another.

Game Two: Cubs 5, SD 4 (10 innings)

W: Abernathy (1-2)
L: Everitt (0-1)

Ernie Banks' two run homer (his sixth) and Billy Williams' RBI triple aren't enough in regulation for the win, as the Padres' Nate Colbert launches his sixth and seventh homers of the year into the leftfield seats at Wrigley. Finally, in the 10th, the Cubs win as Leon Everitt loads the bases and then walks Ernie Banks for the winning run. Dick Selma can't get the win despite striking out 12 and only walking one in seven innings.

Game Three: SD 2, Cubs 1
W: Sisk (1-2)
L: Hands (3-5)
S: Baldschun (2)

A 1-1 tie is broken in the eighth on a Tony Gonzalez RBI single off Bill Hands. Hands is a hard luck loser, striking out 10 in nine innings but getting little run support outside of Don Kessinger's two triples.
