The two aces took the mound for their respective teams, with Camilo Pascual coming off a singularly dominant regular season in which he went 26-1 with a 1.54 ERA.  Lawrence had a good season, winning 15. The Senators’ offense was paced all  season by the power hitting trio of 3B Harmon Killebrew, LF Jim Lemon, and CF Bob Allison, each of who exceeded 30 homers. 1B Roy Sievers added 25 of his own. The Reds succeeded on the strength of their powerful offense, signficantly outscoring any other major league team. Frank Robinson, Vada Pinson, Eddie Kasko, and Gus Bell all hit at least .300.

Washington scored in the bottom of the first when Killebrew doubled in Aspromonte, and added another tally in the second when Newcombe walked Killebrew with the bases loaded. The Reds chipped into the Washington end in the top of the 5th when 3b Willie Jones clubbed a homer. The Reds broke the game open in the top of the 6th, as the Reds loaded the bases before pinch hitter John Powers slammed a bases-clearing triple. When the dust settled, the Reds had a 6-2 lead with four innings to go. Washington got two runs back in the 6th, but that ended the scoring as Jim Brosnan held the Senators for 3 2/3 innings to get the save.

Reds lead 1 game to none.

No scoring through 3 1/2 innings, until the Senators drew first blood in the 4th. A Killebrew single, Lemon double, Sievers single, and Courtney groundout plated two runs and gave the Sens the lead 2-0. The Washington lead would grow to 4-0 in the 6th, as Killebrew jacked a two-run homer. Reds got a couple of much needed runs off Ramos in the 7th to narrow the lead to 4-2. The score stayed that way until the Cincinnati 8th. The Reds strung together two runs on two Senators’ errors and a Robinson double and Temple single to not the score at 4-4. bob Allison promptly put the Senators back on top in their half of the 8th with a solo homer. With one out in the ninth, the Reds sent P Brooks Lawrence to the plate as a pinch hitter. He singled, but when Eddie Kasko grounded out the Reds were down to their last out. Catcher Dutch Dotterer singled Lawrence home, and Frank Robinson and Pete Whisenant hit back-to-back homers to give the Reds an 8-5 lead. Willard Schmidt bent but didn’t break in the 9th, and the Reds held off Washington to make it two in a row.

Washington opened the scoring in the 3rd, as Lemon, Killebrew and Sievers combined to generate a run. Cincinnati evened it up as a Robby sac fly plated Nuxhall. In the 4th, Nuxhall singled Temple home to give Cincy a brief lead. In the Washington 5th, Bertoia hit a two-run shot and Lemon scored on a groundout to give Washington a 4-2 lead. In the Cincinnati 5th. the Reds leveraged a double, three singles, and a sac fly to take a 5-4 lead. Senators got that right back as Bertoia hit his second two-run homer of the game to give the Senators a lead they would not relinquish, 6-5. Senators added an insurance run in the 7th and Stobbs and Hyde kept the Reds scoreless for the 7-5 win.

The pitching matchup definitely favored the Senators, as swing man Lawrence got the nod for the Reds sporting a nearly 5 ERA from the regular season. Senators set the tone early, as they went up 3-0 in the second without an extra base hit. At the start of the Reds 7th, the score was Washington 4- Reds 1. Catcher Ed bailey hit a three run blast to tie the game 4-4. Washington was held scoreless in the top of the 8th, and pinch-hitting pitcher Don Newcombe singled home Temple to give the Reds a 5-4 lead. Orlando Pena slammed the door shut on the Sens in the 9th for a save in his only appearance of the series,

Reds ace Don Newcombe took the mound looking to wrap up the series against Pedro Ramos. Washington again drew first blood in the third as Samford scored on a Bertoia fielders choice. Reds Jerry Lynch homered in the bottom of the 4th to tie it up, and it stayed that way until Bob Lemon homered in the 6h to give Washington a 2-1 lead. Washington still held that lead as Romonosky took the mound in the bottom of the 9th. Little used pinch hitter Chris Cook (3 for 3 in the series) singled, was balked to second, and Pendleton walked to put the winning run on first with no outs. Romosky struck out Kasko and induced a shallow fly out from Ed Bailey before Frank Robinson came to the plate. Pitching carefully, Romosky walked Robinson to load the bases with two outs. With the Reds bench mostly emptied, pitcher Brooks Lawrence was sent up as a pinch hitter. In a wild finish, Lawrence hit a walk off grand slam to seal the series for the Reds!
