1958 Season Starting Now!

The 1958 Major League Baseball season was played from April 14 to October 15, 1958. It was the first season of play in California for both the Los Angeles Dodgers (formerly of Brooklyn) and the San Francisco Giants (formerly of New York City); this marked the first teams to be played on the West Coast. Three teams had relocated earlier in the decade: the Milwaukee BravesBaltimore Orioles, and Kansas City Athletics. New York went without a National League team for four seasons, until the expansion New York Mets began play in 1962.

Bonx Bombers Topple Braves In 1957 World Series

Yankees Win 4 Games to 2 over the Milwaukee Braves…

SUMMARY :

After getting scalped by the Braves hitting in the Opener, the Yankees pitching, combined with some clutch hitting, proved to be just too much for the favored Milwaukee club.

GAME #1

MILW – 15

NYY – 4

Yike, Milwaukee was on the war path for sure. They blew open the game when leading 4-3 going to the 7th they plated three, then had fun putting it away with eight in the 8th. Joe Adcock (4-4 with 5 RBI’s, a double, and a HR) starred at the bat, while Spahn got the Win. Ford took the Loss for New York.

MILWAUKEE LEADS 1-0

GAME #2

MILW – 4

NYY – 11

Yankees showed they were not going to go away despite their Game One disaster by scoring six in the 1st Inning off real life hero Lew Burdette. When they plated three more in the second, they just sailed from that point. Ever player in the Yankee Order got at least a hit, with New York tallying 17 total. Yogi Berra led the way for the Pinstripes with 2 HR’s. Shantz got the W, while Burdette took the Loss.

SERIES TIED 1-1

GAME #3

NYY – 4

MILW – 3

The Series shifted West to Milwaukee after blowouts in both New York games, the change of venue sure changed that as this game was anything put that. Yanks went up 3-0 early, but then watched the Braves eat away at that lead before finally tying things up in the 8th on a Bases Loaded Walk by Frank Torre. New York made the come back mute when Berra doubled in the go ahead run in the 9th, and then Art Ditmar survived another rally attempt in the Bottom of the 9th to secure the Win. Bob Grim blew the Save, but received the Win when Ditmar did get the Save. Ernie Johnson took the L for Milwaukee.

YANKEES LEAD 2-1

GAME #4

NYY – 2

MILW – 5

Warren Spahn was magnificent for the Braves in getting his second Win of the Series, and their bats produced single runs in an Inning five times and it all was too much for the visitors as Sturdivant took the Loss.

SERIES TIED 2-2

GAME #5

NYY – 8

MILW – 4

Whitey Ford was the story for the Yankees in this game for after New York jumped out to a 5-0 lead after five, and then made it 8-0 after seven, all eyes turned to the Yankees starter as he was tossing a No-Hitter! But he couldn’t complete the feat in the 7th for after getting two quick outs he started faltering, not stopping until Milwaukee Catcher Del Rice popped a Grand Slam off of him to send Whitey to the showers. But it was still enough to send the Pinstripes back home leading the Series.

YANKEES LEAD 3-2

GAME #6

MILW - 1

NYY – 6

Yankees Starter Bob Turley was on again, even better than he was in Game #3. After Berra gave New York a quick 1-0 lead with a double to plate the run in the 1st, Braves Start Bob Buhl matched Turley though. When Frank Torre tied things up for Milwaukee with a solo shot in the 5th fans in the stands were starting to get on edge. Berra came to the rescue again though in the Bottom of the 6th with a solo shot and the Yankees led 2-1. Things stayed that way until in the Bottom of the 8th with the Bases Loaded Mickey Mantle came off the bench and cleared the bags with a hit to give New York a huge lead. Going into the Top of the 9th leading 6-1 and Turley flying all seemed well for the home towners, but the Braves refused to go quietly in loading up the bases with one out, yikes! But Turley whiffed the mighty Hank Aaron for the 2nd Out. He looked gassed in doing so, so the Yankees went to the pen and brought in hardened vet Bobby Shantz, who struck out pinch hitter Adcock to give his team the Series!

YANKEES WIN SERIES 4 GAMES TO 2!

REVIEW :
It really came down to consistent Pitching and Hitting for the Yankees in pretty much all of their victories. Just a constant pounding on the Milwaukee Moundsmen, while at the same time receiving clutch pitching over & over versus the Braves vaunted lineup.

MVP :

I am going to cheat here and award Tri-MVP’s, something I personally dislike, but I have too. Yogi Berra more than made up for a rather lack luster season by blasting 4 Home Runs, had 9 RBI’s, while amassing a wonderful 1.063 OPS, and had Clutch Big Hit after Clutch Big Hit. But so did Tony Kubek, and except for the always remember home runs all he did was hit .480 (12 for 25) while carrying a .536 OB and 1.136 OPS, just a tremendous effort on his part. But gosh, how do you not give it to Starting Pitcher Bob Turley for his two awesome starts, including his fantastic effort in the Finale? His final line of a 1.84 ERA, with 18 K’s in 14.2 Innings, while only allowing 10 Hits (though he did Walk 6) for just a .200 Average Against versus a Batting Order like the Braves have, man, that just screams acknowledgment. I just cannot decide between the three, so I am take the easy way out and giving the MVP to all three!

IN FINAL :

A fun year with a very rewarding result to the season for me of course. Other than Mickey Mantle (who really only had the one big hit in the Series, but what a hit) this Yankee Team was just one of solid Pitching and Consistent Hitting, with both just wearing their opponents down by never given in over & over & over again throughout the entire season, all the way to the end and ultimate prize.

A Big Congrats to Milwaukee Braves Skipper Stan Skawinski, who guided his team through a tremendous NL Pennant Race to make it into the World Series.

And a BIG THANKS to Chad for running these Replay’s for us. THANKS CHAD!

On to 1958!
